Charcoal: Out of the Grill and into the Ground

In the heart of the Amazon rainforest lie small plots of fertile ground. Soils in tropical rainforests are notoriously nutrient poor, but the dirt that fills these plots is so rich that the locals sell it as compost. This soil ? called terra preta, Portuguese for ?black earth? ? did not form by accident.

亞馬遜雨林的中心有著小塊肥沃的土地。熱帶雨林中的土壤是眾所周知的營養不良，但填充這些區域的土壤是如此豐富，當地人把它作為堆肥出售。這種土壤稱為terra preta，葡萄牙語為“黑土”，其並非偶然形成。
